ICAD

This year I’m participating in ICAD (Index Card A Day) for the 4th time. There’s a weekly theme with daily prompts, which you can find at Daisy Yellow. I share my cards on my Facebook blog and Instagram on the day I create them and I’ll write a weekly post with more info on this blog.

The prompt for day 55 was pendulum. I found a photo of a pendulum watch in a magazine and went from there.
The prompt for day 56 was spin, which is Dutch for spider. Luckily I had a temporary spider tattoo, the perfect centre of my mandala variation.
Day 57 was the start of the last week with a new theme (inspired by printing, stamping, gelatin printing & hand-carved stamps). The prompt was kite. I had a nice scrap from a gelatin print, just enough to cut a kite and decoration for its tail. I stamped the background with one of my Carve December stamps.
The prompt for day 58 was lime green. I found a lime green piece of a painted book page, which I tore into strips and collaged them on my card. I decorated it with one of my Carve December stamps and a quote. The quote was a free download of iHanna when you subscribe to her newsletter.
And today’s prompt was skeeball, a new word for me. It inspired me to use a few of my circle hand carved stamps from Carve December.
ICAD is almost done, only 2 more days to go. Time flies when you have fun!

The prompt for day 46 was amethyst, which inspired me to this purple collage.

The prompt for day 47 was turnpike. Searching through my clippings helped me create this collage.
The prompt for day 48 was topographic. Topographic images at Pinterest inspired me for this doodle.
The prompt for day 49 was billboard. First I was searching in magazines for a billboard image, but they were too big for an index card. So I made my own billboard with found Dutch text.
Day 50 was the start of week 8 with a new theme (inspired by mandalas & circles). The prompt was escape, but I didn’t use it. Just made a mandala variation.
The prompt for day 51 was number, which resulted in another mandala variation.
The prompt for day 52 was friendship, which I didn’t use. I just made a collage of painted book pages and added a layer of stamped circles.
The prompt for day 53 was note to self. I added my note to another mandala variation.
And today’s prompt was shadow. I just drew circles, coloured them grey and added cut circles and the Dutch word for shadow.
I try to combine the daily prompts with (part of) the weekly theme. For me that’s the fun part of this challenge!

Art Journal Simple Prompts

I’m participating in a weekly challenge on Instagram: Art Journal Simple Prompts (#ajsp52w).

The prompt for week 26 was Z. I made a collage with swans (zwanen in Dutch), an ugly duckling and a crocodile.
The prompt for week 27 was 1 (een in Dutch). It reminded me of a quote of Godfried Bomans at the Grand Gala du Disque in 1963. You can see the part I used in this video, it starts at 5:10. Godfried tells a story about seeing a movie with Marlene Dietrich in it. Then the man next to him says: “Had mijn vrouw maar een zo’n been.” Which is Dutch for if only my wife had such a leg.
The prompt for week 28 was 2. Again I did some handlettering, it’s Dutch for if you let go you have 2 hands free.

The prompts for day 39 was colour chart. So I made a colour chart of my Bic evolutions coloured pencils, my Hema fine liners and my felt tip pens from Ikea.
The prompt for day 40 was blueprint. I made a blue print of one of my Carve December stamps.
The prompt for day 41 was card catalogue. I knew I still had the catalogue card from an old library book Rooie, which was my first altered book. Perfect for this prompt.
The prompt for day 42 was charm. I remembered this quote and decorated it with my fine liners.
Day 43 was the start of a new week with a new theme (inspired by landscapes, maps, cartography & geography). The prompt was direction. I had no idea what to make, until I found the clipping of the lady with the arrow behind her.
The prompt for day 44 was pool. I found this clipping of a swimming pool on a big cruise ship and used that as my starting point.
And today’s prompt was wabi-sabi, which didn’t speak to me. I decided to use prompt nor theme and just play with faces.
I try to combine the daily prompts with (part of) the weekly theme. For me that’s the fun part of this challenge!

Challenge oude borduurpatronen

There’s a new embroidery challenge at Tree of Needlework. This is my variation of the first month. I used perle 8 for the whipped wheel and the chain stitches in the centre. The buttonhole stitch is done in perle 5 and the satin stitch in stranded floss. The closed herringbone stitch is done in cotton a broder and the French knots in DMC special dentelles.
This will be part of a Crazy White block someday.

The prompts for day 32 was caramel. I made a one-staple-collage with part of the wrapping of a caramel-salt-chocolate bar.

The prompt for day 33 was ogee. I like that pattern and tried to draw it freehand.
The prompt for day 34 was constellation. I used part of a quilting fabric with gemini and stitched it on my card with my sewing machine.
The prompt for day 35 was pine tree, perfect for cross stitches on an index card. I found a small pine tree pattern at Pinterest and altered it to fit on my card. I used stranded floss.
Day 36 was the start of a new week with a new theme (inspired by color, color wheels & color charts). I didn’t use the prompt (Thesaurus) and made a color wheel.
The prompt for day 37 was botanical. I drew some simple tulips with colourful felt tip pens.
And the prompt for today was Clue, which didn’t speak to me. So I made a colourful pattern with my fine liners. I made lots of these patterns when I was a kid, it's very relaxing. I think this would make a pretty layout for a crochet blanket.
I try to combine the daily prompts with (part of) the weekly theme. For me that’s the fun part of this challenge!

De nieuwe wending uitdaging

There’s a quilting challenge at the Dutch Quiltersgilde. This is the 4th month. This time we had to experiment with a chevrons block. Again I was guided by my nine-patch variation. This block had a lot of tiny parts, so I stitched it on a foundation.
And here are the first 4 blocks together.
I’m already thinking what to do with the next challenge, a churn dash block.

The prompts for day 25 was rose. I cut a photo of a pink rose and made a collage.

I didn’t use the prompt for day 26 (tinker toys), but made a collage with a reminder for myself. It’s Dutch for don’t forget to spoil yourself every now and then.
The prompt for day 27 was corduroy. I made a staple collage with a piece of corduroy, wallpaper, a tea label and paper from my stash.
The prompt for day 28 was architecture. I found a photo of Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle, which is a very strange building. I added more clippings of other buildings to make a nice collage.
Day 29 was the start of a new week with a new theme (inspired by natural elements, texture, rust, dye, fibre, jute, thread & organic shapes). The prompt was terra cotta, which reminded me of the terra cotta pots in the garden. It was fun to make a new imaginary garden collage. Of course I made the photo in our garden.
The prompt for day 30 was lemon or lemonade. I just opened a new box of lemon & ginger tea, so part of it ended up on my index card. This time I used my sewing machine.
Today’s prompt was mis-matched. I found the feet with mis-matched socks in a magazine and made a funny zetti inspired collage.
I try to combine the daily prompts with (part of) the weekly theme. For me that’s the fun part of this challenge!
