There’s a quilting challenge at the Dutch Quiltersgilde. This month we had to experiment with the Ohio Star block. I made a simple variation inspired by a few variations on Pinterest. I used the foundation method, here I was working on the first part.

And here’s the finished 6 x 6 inch block.

This was the last block of the challenge, so now it’s time to think about how to turn my 9 blocks into a quilt.

I’m participating in a weekly challenge on Instagram: Art Journal Simple Prompts (#ajsp52w). I’m still behind, but last week I made collages for week 38-41 in red, blue, yellow and green.

I made progress photos when I was making the green collage. I started with an acrylic background and lots of green clippings.

And these clippings were not used in my collage, so they are in my stash now for later use.

There’s a quilting challenge at the Dutch Quiltersgilde. This month we had to experiment with a block called Zig Zag Path. Again I started drawing a lot of variations.

After deciding which block to make I had to choose my fabric.

And here’s the finished 6 x 6 inch block, I only changed the size of the parts.

Visible mending

Some time ago I discovered visible mending on Instagram, the perfect solution for my daughter’s jeans. She works with chemicals and sometimes that results in tiny damaged spots on her jeans. So I gave it a try. First I made a woven square, you can still see the damaged spot behind the unwoven threads. This square was done in 2 different DMC colour variation threads: green for the first step and pink/purple for the weaving.

Then I added a triangle in the green colour variations.

Another triangle in the pink/purple colour variations to hide the last damaged spot.

And this is the finished mending.

I already washed her jeans a few times and the embroidery stays pretty. My daughter was so happy, she wanted me to repair her black jeans too.

This one got some woven puzzle pieces in pink, which didn’t photograph very well on the black jeans.

Google translate helped my find the word zero in many different languages.

Cover for my altered book

I have a lot of leftover embroidery thread from kits and thought what to do with them.

A cover for my altered book was the answer. First I embroidered the label, there was a lot of red in this stash! My altered books always keep their title, so it’s called The secrets of karate.

And now I’m starting to fill the remaining Aida with random cross stitches.

Of course I started drawing a lot of variations. I try to change the block in a way you can still recognize the original.

My calendar reminded me to start patching the block.

Art Journal Simple Prompts

I’m participating in a weekly challenge on Instagram: Art Journal Simple Prompts (#ajsp52w). The last few weeks I had not much time to blog, so here are week 29-33. The prompt for week 29 was 3. I collaged the Dutch quote for third time’s a charm.

The prompt for week 30 was 4. Again I did some hand lettering. Onder 4 ogen is Dutch for in private, but translated literally it’s under 4 eyes. The prompt for week 31 was 5 and again I did some hand lettering.

The prompts for week 32 was 6, which made me draw a house on number 6. The prompt for week 33 was 7, which made me make a nice collage.

There’s a quilting challenge at the Dutch Quiltersgilde. This month we had to experiment with a crossed square block. I started drawing a lot of variations. It was not easy to decide which block I should make!

Of course I stitched my block by hand.

My finished block, I only changed the size of the parts and added a third colour.

And these are all blocks so far.

Quirky Dutch Summer

Quirky Dutch Summer is a series of weekly blogposts at Marit’s Paper World with inspiration and tutorials.

In week 6 Willy Duit showed us how to make a book with envelopes. I made it some time ago, but had no time to blog about it. Staining the envelopes with tea didn’t work, so I used tea dye ink to add some colour to my envelopes.

I bound my book with 3 wooden buttons.

I’m not sure what to put in the pockets of my book yet, time will tell!

I made pockets on the inside of the covers too.
