Work In Progress Wednesday - November 27

Last week I introduced my new Christmas project. This week I finished 15 patches, only 10 more  to go! Here are all finished patches until today. Let me share them a little bit closer, one at the time.

Patch 2: whip stitched edge with perle 5 and quilted with perle 8.

Patch 3: whip stitched edge and quilted with stranded floss, straight stitches for the snowflakes with DMC 80.

Patch 4: whip stitched edge with Caron Wildflowers and quilted with cotton a broder.

Patch 5: whip stitched edge with stranded floss and colonial knots with perle 5.

Patch 6: whip stitched edge with stranded floss and quilted with Caron Wildflowers.

Patch 7: whip stitched edge with perle 8 and quilted with stranded floss.

Patch 8: whip stitched edge with perle 5 and quilted with cotton a broder.

Patch 9: whip stitched edge with perle 5 and decorated with beads.

Patch 10: whip stitched edge with perle 5 and cross stitches with Caron Wildflowers.

Patch 11: whip stitched edge with stranded floss and quilted with cotton a broder.

Patch 12: whip stitched edge with cotton a broder and quilted with stranded floss.

Patch 13: whip stitched edge with cotton a broder and straight stitches with Sulky metallic.

Patch 14: whip stitched edge with stranded floss and decorated with beads and sequins.

Patch 15: whip stitched edge with perle 5 and quilted with stranded floss.

Patch 16: whip stitched edge with perle 5, stranded floss for the colonial knots and quilting.

Old straight, crossed and plaited feather stitches

Sharon posted TAST stitches 91, 92 and 93 yesterday. I didn’t use them much, so I’m looking forward to experiment. Of course I share my old samples first. TAST stitch 91 is straight sided feather stitch AKA upright feather stitch. I already made one row on my feather stitch sampler last year. I stitched it with 2 threads of stranded floss.

This sample is part of my PLOS border sampler. I stitched 3 rows of upright feather stitches in perle 5 and decorated it with slipped detached chain stitches in perle 8 and 12.

TAST stitch 92 is crossed feather stitch. I only stitched this at the border of my last TAST sampler. The threads are perle 8.

TAST stitch 93 is plaited feather stitch. Again only stitched at the border of my last TAST sampler with perle 8.

Twisted satin stitch

TAST stitch 89 and 90 is twisted satin stitch with and without beads.

A few days ago I saw Queenie’s experiments with satin stitch, she made a double twist. Of course I had to try that, so here’s my twisted satin stitch with a double twist in perle 8. I played with the tension of the twist, loose at the left and tighter at the right.

Then I tried the double twist with a bead between the twists. The beads are locked, so they behave nicely!

Here I made a twist over 2 satin stitches. I think this looks pretty in 2 different colours. The threads are perle 8.

Again a twist over 2 satin stitches, but this time with a bead. I alternated the place of the bead by adding the bead before or after the twist.

I came up with this nice border when I was playing with the size of the 2 parts of the twisted satin stitch. The thread is Caron Watercolours.

Of course I took some step by step photos as a reminder. Here you can see I first made a small satin stitch. Then I came up again at the left and below for the twisted part.

It looked much better with a double twist.

I mirrored the second part of the repeat. I came up at the right and below for the twisted part and I twisted it the other way.

Again a second twist.

In this row I added a bead before and after the twist. The thread is perle 12.

This is a detail of my last row. A double twist with a variation over 2 satin stitches.

And going to the backside at the top of the right satin stitch.

Orange Flowers

This pretty ATC arrived a few days ago. It’s made by Robin in the style of Teesha Moore. She made lots of these little pillows, take a look at them here. They were the inspiration for my new Christmas project. Thank you Robin!

Work In Progress Wednesday - November 20

I couldn’t resist starting a new project, so I make it my WIPW Christmas project. 

My fantasy fabric book will be in hibernation until next year. The first step for my Christmas project was cutting fabric in different sizes, but always 2 of the same size in matching fabrics. Here they are ready for the next step.

Then I had to sew 3 sides of the 2 matching fabrics. Santa was the first one.

This lovely red fabric with holy leaves was the last one to sew.

Then it was time to stuff them, I’m almost halfway on this photo.

The last step on the sewing machine was closing the last side of the patches.

The result of an evening with my sewing machine.

In daylight I made a colour palette to use on these little patches.

My first finished patch. The edge is whip stitched with stranded floss, the quilting is done with perle 8. I stitched colonial knots on the red stars and beads on the green stars.

I keep my patches in a basket with the threads in a zip lock bag, ready to start stitching.
